forecast starting tomorrow. this morning quite cloudy and good news is it's keeping temperatures a little bit warming. numbers today not near freezing territory like what we've seen in the past couple of days. here's a shot outside. >> developing news overnight. police officers are now standing by in down on the san francisco, that is after officers arrested 55 occupy protestors in a major raid this morning. the arrest happened at around 4:00 this morning in front of the federal reserve building. according to police, some officers were spit on and one was pushed by the demonstrators but no one was hurt. two flat bed trucks were loaded be belongings, like sleeping bags and the city says the protestors will be able to get their belongings back once they get out of jail.

this morning's arrest started after a stand off. tomorrow occupy protestors plan to disrupt one of the businessiest ports, the port of oakland. tomorrow's effort stretches from los angeles to vancouver. labor unions are against it but some of their members do support the occupiers. they want to highlight unfair working conditions at major ports. >> a woman tries to get away from a crashed car and nearly steps on live power lines. >> stay there, don't move. livewires. >> she was a passenger in a bmw that crashed into a power poll of a high speed chase with officers. it happened around 2:30 in the morning at interstate 5:30. the driver 5:30 -- 580. some of them have been arrested

but one person is still on the loose. looks like they started chasing the vehicle because officers say it was driving eradically. crews were alled to clear the power lines and now more than 200 people are without power in that area. they say it will take several hours to get the power restored. >> 200 people are without a home this morning after a fire last night in san francisco's tenderloin district broke out just after 5:00 p.m. as an apartment building in the 300 block of ellis street near jones. at least six people were taken to the hospital. most of them suffering from smoke inhalation. it's not clear exactly how the fire started. firefighters were able to contain it, though, after ant an hour. in fact, it stopped another fire in san francisco from spreading overnight. it broke out last night in a three story home. when firefighters arrived, the

home was fully engulfed in flames and then spread to two more homes nearby. if crews hadn't responded quickly the damage could have been a lot worse. >> as you can see, the buildings are very close together and the potential for significant fire resulted in three alarm speed requested which is approximately 20 companies and 100 firefighters that did a very good job of containing this fire to the buildings involved. >> nobody was injured. the cause is under investigation. >> a drive-by shooting took the life of a man who was in his bed in west oakland. this morning, officers are still trying to figure out who did it. it happened on east 28th street at 3:30 saturday morning. the man that died was killed while he was in bed with his sleeping wife. a single bullet ripped through the front wall of the house. a neighbor heard gunshots and saw a dark colored four door car speed away over speed bumps and through stop signs.

the man was declared dead at the scene. his daughter says their home has been targeted before. >> this is the third time we have been hit. the first one was at our house exactly too. >> do you have any idea why someone would shoot your house. no, my father, he just stays in the house, that's all he does. he just brings us to school. he doesn't have enemies. >> police are still trying to figure out the motive in the case. it came after a peace marchand memorial for victims of gun violence in oakland. >> for the first time newt gingrich went into this republican presidential debate as the front runner. it made him a target. his opponents wasted no time taking aim. >> new gop front runner newt gingrich took punches early and often, especially from his closest rival. >> we don't need folks that are lifetime washington people to get this country out of the mess it's in. we need people from outside washington. >> the only reason you didn't

become a career politician is you lost in 1994. >> if i would have been able to get into the nfl like i hoped when i was a kid i would have been a football star all my life too. >> the rest of the candidates tried to use the abc news iowa debate to take down both men. michelle bauchman combined their names. >> if you look at newt romney, they were for gap and trade. if you look for newt romney, they were for the illegal immigration problem and they were for the $700 billion bailout. >> earlier, gingrich found himself in the middle of a controversy regarding comments he made on the jewish channel. >> we've had an invented palestine people who are arabs. >> the statement infuriated a spokesman that said gingrich needs a history lesson. during the debate, gingrich did not back down. >> somebody ought to have the courage to tell the truth. these people are terrorists,

they teach terrorism in their schools. it's fundamentally time for somebody to have the guts and stand up and say enough lying about the middle east. >> his opponents didn't necessarily disagree with that but challenged his tactics. >> coming up here on face the nation, all roads lead to iowa. michelle bauchman joins bob in washington d.c. he's also going to be talking to steve king of iowa. he is considered a key endorsement ahead of next month's caucas. that is on face the nation starting at 8:30 right after our broadcast. >> at least three people are dead after an earthquake in mexico. the quake had a magnitude of 6.5. it was centered in the western state between mexico city. they evacuated building and they were shaking in the capitol but no reports of any damage. elsewhere a man died when the driver of a cargo truck was

killed when rock fell on his vehicle. >> an agreement today at the un climate in africa. they agreed to start negotiations that would put all under the same legal regime. that would take effect by 2020. now only industrial countries have legally binding targets to cut the emissions. >> a toy drive had to find other locations after an elk lodge near buffalo new york was destroyed by the fire. check out the smoke, it happened early this morning. no one was in the building at the time. no word on what started that fire. >> it is a call to shop and to help save businesses along one of the most iconic bay area avenues. weeks after a massive fire at the corner of telegraph and haste. shoppers have been saying away from the whole area. now they hope the new push will

bring back the crowds. >> that's the message businesses along telegraph avenue are hoping customers are receiving since the streets reopened on wednesday. >> it's picking up but we haven't had as many transactions as before. >> people were afraid to come into the area because they thought something was happening here but it wasn't effecting the businesses, it was just the one building that unfortunately burned down. >> this is what the building looks like the day after the fire which broke out the night of november 18th. it housed 39 apartments and two popular restaurants but the fire left it in danger of collapse so the city blocked off telegraph avenue and haste street and that caused enough of a headache that some of the stores lost more than half of their business. >> you have to go around and around and around to get here and the parking was what it is. >> over the past week, the city finally knocked the building

down and reopened the street just across from the pile of rubble is this lot which has been empty for decades, growing weeds and adding to the general blight. >> we finally run out of patience. >> so the city is forcing new developments. >> now we have two holes but it's an opportunity. it's a wonderful opportunity to turn that around. >> my hope is that everything will be taken care of and business will come back and the city will cooperate and try to help us out here and get us out of this small hole that has been provided for us. >> there are so many fun shops there. i had such a good time. >> i was there when they were trying to take down the building. it was dead quite, middle of the day and close to the weekend and people just aren't working down there because it's so tough to physically find it. >> right. right in front of the holidays. >> yeah murphy's law. >> that is apparently when these businesses do up to 40%

elderly driver lost control of his pickup truck, and crashed into a safeway 7:43 now, shoppers got out of the way just in time. a driver lost control of his pick up truck and crashed into a safe way store. it happened yesterday morning. apparently the 80 year old driver's foot slipped off the

break and he hit the gas. the truck narrowly missed several customers and employees. although damage to the store was extensive, the driver was not hurt. nobody else was either. not clear if he's going to be sited for that. >> more bay area headlines this morning, thousands of local nurses are set to strike. the california nurses association says 4,000 registered nurses from 8 bay area hospitals will be holding a one day strike on december 22nd. they're upset about issues from health care coverage to patient care concerns. >> the pepper spraying incident at uc davis landed university officials in the hot seat. they are going to testify in front of lawmakers on wednesday. legislatures say they are disturbed at how peaceful student demonstrators were treated by campus police. >> volunteers honored our country's veterans at the

golden gate cemetery this weekend. part of the nationwide reach across america event. it's for members lost from each branch of the armed forces as well as pows and those missing in action. >> well, we have been missing rain from our forecast for a long time now. seems we have been bone dry here in december. the slight chanceover rain. >> exactly, even with that slight chance it's not going to bring our totals up enough to make a big impact. it's starting to become a concern especially as we've seen conditions that have become windy. thankfully we don't have to contend with the wind but we are going to see a little bit of rain, hopefully into our forecast starting tomorrow and later on into the week as well. but this morning we in the clear, we're dry and we're seeing cloud cover and even patchy fog. as you look at the city here, you can see not too bright yet. we're going to see blue sky later on this afternoon but clouds will continue to be an issue into the afternoon hours but looking nice in this shot.

the grey is not an indicator of rain quite yet w. very to wait until later tonight into monday. as you're temperaturing out the door, temperatures on the warmer side. 5 to 10 diagnoses warmer than where we were sitting yesterday at this time, in fact because of the cloud cover that we have seen pushed from the coastline on shore. into the afternoon, we'll see temperatures that are cooler as our highs than what we saw yesterday. definitely going to need a jacket. highs making it into the mid 50s. mostly sunny skies. we are seeing a weak on shore flow. that's pushing into the inland valleys and that will be the reason we'll actually see some of the cooler temperature assuming long this afternoon. now, you see this system drop down from the pacific northwest, we'll see minimal rainfall totals. any rain we see is only going to be a couple of tenths of an inch at most. we'll only get a few hundreds of an inch. the santa cruz mountains will see the bulk of the wet weather. most will be to the south as

the temperature drops down and we start to see heavier rain fall most of that will be the california mexico border. you might need the umbrella but not a wash out by any means. you're going to be on the cooler side as well. 57 is the high in redding and sacramento. for our highs here in the bay area, 50s for the most part. mountain view, topping out at 56. heyward at 51. 51 for danville, same story for napa and no 60s on the board here in the north bay. oakland topping out at 54. slight chance of rain starting tonight into tomorrow but we're not putting that on the extended 7 day you can see keeping just mosley cloudy skies for monday and then we'll see sunshine as high pressure builds on tuesday. wednesday seeing mostly sunny skies as well and this is the

system we want to watch more closely. later on in the week, wednesday into thursday is when we'll start to see more showers once again not seeing significant rainfall totals but should be a little bit more than what we're getting sunday night into monday. every little bit helps, especially when we have been waiting to long so see any wet weather. it's becoming unseasonable not to have moisture this time of the year. >> presidential debate last night was a good one and the first one since herman cain was out of the race and we saw newt gingrich leading the pack ahead of the presidential debate in iowa. but does he have what it takes to beat president obama. ever? >> good morning. the first question i've got to ask you, newt gingrich rocketing back up the polls. is this real? >> totally and completely.

the quality of everybody else on that poll is so bad that newt looks good. >> yes but i understand the republican insiders are actually liking him being the nominee, why. >> if you're on his team you love him. he is polling better but does not poll well with independents. >> in your last column, you describe newt as having not just a skeleton in his closet, you said he had a graveyard full of skeletons. he's been married three times, he left his wife in a hospital bed. >> he didn't leave her, he took her the papers. >> he's going to have to explain himself. he'll have conversations with several other people that have been in that category including herman cain and bill clinton, just maybe in america you're going to have the first personality that you don't have to say has scandals.

he is a scandal. >> okay 31% of folks, marriage, that kind of issue is a deal breaker but to many it's not. >> what do you think it is? >> if he's up against obama who is mr. family man it does not look good. >> and believe me, you're going to see more of the daughters than you have ever seen and of course the wife is going to be incredibly sympathetic to all the ex-wifes. so it should have fun. >> briefly for a minute, this week in oakland, took out the signatures to recall mayor, your analysis. >> there are two separate groups collecting signatures and the city attorney is going to have to rule that anybody that signs, if they're properly assigned has to be counted if it shows up tateyama time and the place appropriately. that means jean is going to be running against herself and the one thing you don't ever want to do in the world of politics

where power lines trap a cruiser. >> and ready to blast off, the first private company to make cargo runs to the international space station. welcome back to weekend early edition. it is 8:00. thanks for joining us today. >> it's mostly cloudy right now. it's a little preview of what we might see later on which is a chance of showers tonight into tomorrow. right now we are still dry, a little bit grey out there. temperatures, though, on the warmer side relatively speaking. not anywhere close to freezing which we have seen for the last several days. you can enjoy a warmer start to your day. a full look at your forecast coming up later on in the show. >> this morning officers arrested 55 occupy protestors in san francisco. the arrests happened at around 4:00 this moshing in front of the federal reserve building. police in riot gear moved in on people that had been sleeping there in sleeping bags. according to police some officers were spit on and one

she was a passenger on a bmw that crashed after leading officers on a high speed chase. the car was going up to 100 miles per hour. it hit that pole this morning. officers believed there were either three or four people in the car. a woman and a man are in custody right now. the fallen power lines did start a small fire as you can see there but it was quickly put out and a car was also briefly caught under the power lines t. he had to shut off the power, it is still out. more than 2,000 people were in the dark. they restored some of the power but more than 400 people are still without power because of that crash. >> 200 people are without a home after a fire last night in san francisco's tenderloin district. it broke out after 5:00 p.m. at least six people were taken to the hospital. most of them because of smoke

ex based in hawthorne. and he spent time aboard the national space station, it is a defining moment in u.s. history. >> this will be the first time that a spacecraft built by a commercial company flies in space and docks the international space station. something that only space shuttles and russian spacecraft have done before. >> the launch is scheduled to go on february 7th, less than two months from now. the supplies will be delivered by a space kastle built in hawthorne being drop tested into the ocean last year. this is the dragon one which orbited if earth last year. a newer model will be launched in february from a pad seen here from this video released in 2009. >> of course all of this is a precursor to doing it with people on board. that's why i came is to help them go to the next step which

is once we can deliver the laundry and the mail, we want to deliver the people. >> it will deliver food, clothing, water and equipment needed in space walks when its launched in february but the 1600 people that now work here at the facility in hawthorne think this is the beginning of something big. by 2014 they plan to also transport astronauts to the space station. >> former penn state football coach jerry sandusky charged with sexual abuse could face some of his accusesors for the first time. he is facing 52 counts of sexually molesting ten boys. he claims he didn't do it. a hearing to determine if that case will go to trial is set for tuesday. six witnesses which could include some of his alleged victims are expected to testify. >> more than 2200 children in san francisco's public schools are homeless. that is a huge increase from just a few years ago and city

leaders want to know why. nearly 270 families are on the waiting list ifs shelters in the city. it's the highest number ever. families are waiting more than six months for a room. some homeless families were seeking shelter in the occupy encampments. they're asking city leaders for help right now. the board of supervisors will hold a public hearing on this issue tomorrow. >> we heard about the raids on occupy camps in oakland and san francisco but one major camp remains. we chatted about the berkley occupation. >> you know its groan grown to the 107 tents over there. as the other sites are being closed down people are coming to berkley and we're concerned about it because, you know, at some point, the health and safety issue is becoming a real problem for us. it is not intended -- you know, berkley has been very tolerant,

we're sympathetic to the movement but we think that what's happening over time is it's changing. it is changing here as also around the nation. you find more homeless encampment rather than an occupy. >> is camping there illegal. >> it is. >> why are you allowing it. >> our city basically figure as long as it was nonviolent and contained in this one particular area we have a park and it didn't effect anyone particularly. we haven't had a lot of complaints until recently. we didn't want to have a heavy hand at this point and time. we think people should have the right to protest and petition their government and stuff so we just felt that it was not appropriate to step in and have a heavy hand. but things have been progressing so it's been a long time and, you know, we have to

rethink it, particularly when we see incidents occurring in the park itself. >> are you considering going in and doing a raid. >> we're still doing a wait and see kind of attitude. we don't feel its reached the point, at least right now that we need to do anything and if we do, you know, we will do it in a nonviolent way. >> yeah, very interesting. the people that even other journalists i've talked to about it, we haven't paid a lot of attention to the camp in berkley. there was so much attention being paid to san francisco and oakland but a lot of them have gone to berkley. >> especially since the others have been raided all eyes are on this one and these people are probably wondering are we next. >> right and he has a lot of patients with them but it does look like he is making moves toward some sort of, i think it's going to be a long process. >> just a question of when. >> exactly. >> all right. looking ahead to the weather

santa clar university was offering him a full scholarship. he had a 3.9 gpa at a school designed to give low income kids a real education. five years later, we see the pay off as a young man crosses the stage to receive his second degree, a masters in mechanical engineering. the home video is fuzzy but the accomplishment is not. >> i was able to make it, anyone can make it. a kid like myself who going into high school could barely read and write. going from the worst of districts in the country for elementary school. >> it was known as the murder capitol of the country when he was growing up there and he saw the crime and the poverty firsthand.

his father has been in prison for his entire life. his mother raised three children in a tiny crowded home. she was always working. >> 6:00 in the morning she went off to work. she would come back, give us food and then later that night she would go work as a janitor. >> he remembers her not eating so her children would have enough food. so gio told us he could hardly wait until he was old enough to get a work permit and a job. >> can you tell us your mayor yet? >> i'm in high school, i'm going to college. >> okay. >> i work to help my mom with the rent. i help get food, help buy clothes for my little brother, for me, for my mom. >> being the father figure for his younger brother and having all of those responsibilities, it is astonishing what he accomplished. he is so appreciative of every opportunity that he's ever had.

to find out how. >> we have the chance at rain this week. i keep saying it but it's really probably not going to have. >> i've been wanting to say it. >> everybody is excited. rain maybe potentially, wet weather in the forecast because we do need it. you're right. it's a slight chance and it will be very minimal rainfall totals. the majority of the moisture will be to the south but we're starting to see the cloud cover already in the forecast as you're taking a lookout side, you'll see those clouds this morning and temperatures, though, because of that cloud cover, a little bit on the warm side. numbers 5 to 10 degrees warmer. so that's a positive thing to look at in terms of the clouds we're seeing. looking outside at the golden gate bridge, we will see partly sunny conditions by the afternoon. looks like we have rain on lenses but i think it's dirt on the camera. no wet weather yet. as you take a look at the city, not too clear this morning. we are dealing with cloud cover bay area wide and into the afternoon we'll see the low

clouds in the picture. as you step outside this morning, dealing with the clouds in addition to patchy fog and temperatures sitting in the 40s and even 50s for the most part. this afternoon not warming up a lot. in fact, the clouds helping keep us warm today are going to prevent us from getting warm into the afternoon. you can see rain being from low to mid 50s although mostly sunny skies. any chance of rain will be later on in the day. satellite showing most of the west coast is covered in clouds. a little bit of a light on shore flow pushing those clouds into the inland locations. in term of the rainfall we may see, we're looking at a few hundredths of an inch. certainly not a significant rain event. low pressure dropping down, down into california, that's where the bulk of the weather is going to be. they're going to need the umbrellas more than we do. northern california looking

good. 57 for sacramento, 59 for fresno. here in the bay area, numbers in the others for the most part. east bay seeing high 40s and low 50s as well. 52 for walnut creek and 51 for napa. they're topping out at 50 today. monday we see the slight chance of rain, sunshine in store for tuesday. wednesday partly cloudy conditions and thursday, we're actually putting on the 7 day the icon with the rain. that's because our consider chance for seeing wet weather is toward the end of the work week, even though we're not going to see significant rainfall totals but it will be wetter than anything we see right here in the bay area for the next couple of days. in the clear for the most part but with keep your raincoat handy just in case. >> the good thick is it sounds like a weather for all of the holiday shopping lists. >> absolutely. >> yeah i haven't even started. >> tomorrow is the business

to chat about the game plan. >> good morning. we have the former mayor and joy from the san francisco chronical. two guys that know the bay area and politics. the big, big game of musical chairs is sports. this week, 49ers, pretty clear, they're moving to santa clar, your take on that. >> they have been working on that for several years. they have gotten the financing and adjusted to the idea of being down there because apparently if license operations seems to be more responsive there than here. >> in other words they can fill the seats. >> no question. but what they have to be smart about is live their head quarters in san francisco. they have to have a san francisco imagine and it will be some what akin to the giants and the jets. they both play in new jersey and live in new york. >> who takes hit politically. the mayor? >> i don't -- he was the one.

that's where the negotiations broke down. >> now, you worked hard to get that stadium deal passed. do you think we could get something like that passed because now the warriors are talking about moving to san francisco s. that going to have to be a publicly or financed deal. >> a basketball facility can be a publicly financed deal because you can connect it to the convention bureau. 06 games all played in downtown and everybody loves basketball in one fashion or another. it's a great concert arena as well. so you can have a system that allows yourself for 200 dates out of the year to pay for it. >> the plus or a minus t whole business of sports and politicians, it's a gamble for them. >> all the projections about how much revenue, they're also so overblown and the taxpayers say look how many jobs are brought in, they're always overblown. >> i was talking to one sports economist and he said you can
